Prevention & Prohibition of Ragging

  •      Ragging has ruined countless innocent lives and careers. In order to eradicate it, Hon’ble Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 887 of 2009, passed the judgement wherein guidelines were issued for setting up of a Central Crisis Hotline and Anti-Ragging database. In accordance with the orders, UGC (University Grants Commission), Govt. of India has developed http://www.antiragging.in web portal.


  •      Ragging in any form is banned inside and outside the campus. Strict action is taken against persons flouting this rule; no leniency is shown. Suspension and/or withdrawal from the hostel/ college is the first action against the offender. Please note that under the Karnataka Education Act of 1983, ragging is a criminal offence and punishable with one year imprisonment. The Supreme Court of India has also defined ragging as a criminal offence.

Definition: Ragging

  •      As per the guidelines on ragging issued by the Honourable Supreme Court of India: “Any disorderly conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, or handling with rudeness any other student, in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student or asking the students to do any act or perform something which such student will not do in the ordinary course and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student.”


  •      Ragging is strictly prohibited inside and outside the GOVT. POLYTECHNIC, VALSAD campus. The Anti-Ragging Committee constituted for this purpose by An anti-Ragging Committee constituted by this institute is empowered to take an immediate action against any untoward incident and counsel the fresher.


  •      Students seeking admission shall have to furnish undertaking in this regard. The student will be required to give an undertaking in the pro forma, signed by himself/herself and his/her parent/guardian to the effect that he/she is aware of the approach of institute/university towards ragging and the punishment to which he/she shall be liable, if found guilty of ragging.


  •      All the students admitted under the institute will have to strictly observe and abide by the discipline rules prescribed by the university /Institute and he/she will submit to the disciplinary jurisdiction of the Head of the Institution or other competent officers or authorities or bodies of the University as the case may be and in this respect he/she has to submit the declaration in the proforma at the time of admission.


  •      To enhance familiarity and to acclimatize the fresher to the academic and social environment of the campus, the institute organizes an orientation session in the first week of each new academic calendar.


  •      In accordance with the UGC regulations 2009 on curbing the menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, it is pertinent to note that as per the said regulations, the students and parents/guardian are required to submit an affidavit Appendix – I for Students and Appendix– II for parents/guardian).
